When we typically think of volcanoes, our minds usually conjure up dramatic images of those towering, cone-shaped mountains on land, dramatically spewing lava and ash, all visible and loud. But here&rsquo;s a real mind-blower: the vast, <em>vast</em> majority of Earth&rsquo;s volcanoes aren&rsquo;t actually on land at all!</p> <p>Most of them are tucked away, deep beneath the ocean&rsquo;s surface, along immense underwater mountain chains known as mid-ocean ridges. We&rsquo;re talking about an estimated 75% of <em>all</em> volcanic activity on Earth occurring down there! These aren&rsquo;t just tiny, isolated vents; many are part of massive, continuous mountain ranges that collectively stretch for tens of thousands of miles, making them longer than any mountain range found on land.</p>
