You know how sometimes you look at a world map in a textbook or online, and you see countries like Greenland looking absolutely massive, almost as big as Africa, right? Well, prepare for a little &amp;lsquo;whoa&amp;rsquo; moment, because Did You Know that those common world maps you&amp;rsquo;ve grown up with are actually pretty misleading when it comes to the &lt;em&gt;actual&lt;/em&gt; size of countries?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&amp;rsquo;s all thanks to something called the &lt;strong&gt;Mercator Projection&lt;/strong&gt;, which is a way of flattening our round Earth onto a flat, rectangular surface. Think about trying to peel an orange and flatten the peel without tearing it – it&amp;rsquo;s impossible without stretching and distorting some parts! The same thing happens when cartographers (map makers) try to represent our globe on a flat page. To make lines of longitude straight and parallel (which is super helpful for navigation, especially back in the days of sea exploration), the Mercator projection has to stretch out landmasses more and more the further away they are from the equator.&lt;/p&gt;</description></item></channel></rss>
