The War That Lasted Less Than an Hour!

tl;dr: The shortest war ever recorded was the Anglo-Zanzibar War in 1896, lasting only 38 minutes before the British Royal Navy overwhelmed the Zanzibar Sultanate's forces.

Did you know that the shortest war in recorded history lasted for a grand total of just 38 minutes? Talk about a quick skirmish!

This fascinating tidbit takes us back to August 27, 1896, to the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of East Africa. The conflict, known as the Anglo-Zanzibar War, was between the United Kingdom and the Zanzibar Sultanate.

Here’s the lowdown: When a pro-British Sultan of Zanzibar suddenly died, his nephew, Khalid bin Barghash, took over without the British approval. Now, the British had a treaty that stated the Sultan had to be chosen with their permission. They weren’t too pleased about Khalid’s unilateral move and issued an ultimatum: step down by 9 AM on August 27th, or face the consequences.

Khalid, perhaps misjudging the British resolve or his own defenses, decided to defy them. He gathered his forces, fortified the palace, and even brought out an old warship. As the deadline approached and passed, the British Royal Navy, with their warships positioned in the harbor, opened fire on the palace.

The Zanzibari forces, with their outdated weapons and vastly outnumbered defenses, simply couldn’t stand a chance against the might of the British fleet. The shelling devastated the palace and quickly silenced the Zanzibari resistance. By 9:38 AM, just 38 minutes after the first shot was fired, Khalid had fled, his flag was pulled down, and the war was officially over.

It’s a really wild piece of history, showing how quickly events can unfold and how sometimes, a conflict can be resolved (or, well, dominated) in less time than it takes to watch an episode of your favorite show! It’s certainly a record that’s unlikely to be broken anytime soon, isn’t it?
