Did You Know Your Nose Is Always There, But Your Brain Just Ignores It?

tl;dr: Your nose is always in your field of vision, but your brain cleverly filters it out so you don't notice it all the time.

You know how sometimes you’re looking for your keys, and they’re right in front of you, but you just don’t see them? Well, your brain does something a little like that all the time with your nose!

Even as you’re reading this, your nose is actually sitting right there in your field of vision. Seriously, take a moment and try to focus on it – you’ll probably catch a glimpse of it peeking into your view from the bottom. But for most of your waking hours, your brain is incredibly clever and just ’edits out’ your nose from what you consciously perceive. It’s a fantastic example of what’s called ‘sensory adaptation’ or ‘unconscious selective attention.’

Think about it: if your brain didn’t do this, that little fleshy bit would be a constant, annoying obstruction right in the middle of everything you look at! Instead, your brain understands that your nose is a permanent fixture and not usually important information, so it simply filters it out, letting you focus on the world beyond your nose. It’s constantly taking in the raw data from your eyes and then creating a seamless, coherent picture of reality for you, intelligently deciding what’s important enough to show you and what can be safely ignored. Pretty wild, right? Your brain is a master editor!
