Did You Know? There's a Secret, Lost Continent Hiding Beneath Our Oceans!

You know about the seven continents, right? North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. But what if I told you there’s an eighth continent out there, mostly hidden from plain sight, that scientists have only relatively recently confirmed?

Meet Zealandia!

Imagine a landmass roughly two-thirds the size of Australia – that’s about half the size of Europe, or even bigger than Greenland – that’s almost entirely submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean. Only about 6% of it is above water, and that 6% includes New Zealand and New Caledonia!

For years, geologists suspected it was there, but it was officially declared a continent in 2017. What makes it a continent and not just a big landmass or an island? Well, it ticks all the boxes: it’s well-defined, significantly larger than any mere microcontinent, has a diverse geology with a continental crust thicker than oceanic crust, and it’s separated from Australia by a distinct oceanic basin.

It’s truly a fascinating geological mystery, slowly drifting and sinking over millions of years after breaking away from the supercontinent Gondwana.
