Back in 1896, there was a conflict between the British Empire and the Zanzibar Sultanate. It all kicked off because a new Sultan, who wasn’t exactly chosen by the British, took power after the previous one died. The British weren’t happy about this and gave him an ultimatum: step down by 9 AM on August 27th, or face their fleet.

The Sultan decided to fight, assembling his forces and even preparing the royal yacht for battle. But, spoiler alert, it didn’t go so well for him. At exactly 9:00 AM, the British warships opened fire. Within minutes, the Sultan’s palace was crumbling, his small navy was sunk, and his troops were quickly overwhelmed. The whole affair, from the first shot fired to the moment Zanzibar’s flag was pulled down and replaced with a white one, only lasted an astonishing 38 minutes. Some historians even clock it as short as 30 minutes! It’s officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the shortest war ever recorded. Think about it – less time than it takes to bake a quick batch of cookies, an entire war was fought and won. Talk about efficient conflict resolution, right?
