Did You Know? E.T.'s Famous Footsteps Were Just Jell-O!
You know that distinct, squishy, almost adorable sound E.T. makes when he’s shuffling around, looking for candy or trying to ‘phone home’? It’s an absolutely iconic sound effect that really helped bring the character to life and make him feel like a truly alien (but friendly!) presence.
Well, prepare for a little ‘whoa!’ moment: that famous, unforgettable sound wasn’t some complex electronic synthesis or a fancy recording of a rare creature. Nope! The legendary sound designer, Ben Burtt, who also gave us the sounds for R2-D2 and lightsabers, actually created E.T.’s signature squishy footsteps by… squishing Jell-O!
Seriously! He would apparently stick his hands into bowls of grape jelly and just… squish it. The resulting gloopy, wet, slightly resonant sounds were exactly what director Steven Spielberg was looking for to give E.T. that unique, earthy, yet otherworldly gait. It’s a brilliant example of how creativity and simple, everyday objects can combine to make movie magic that sticks with you for decades. It just goes to show you that sometimes the most imaginative solutions come from the most unexpected places—like your kitchen pantry!
