Did You Know? Astronauts Get Taller in Space!
Did you know that astronauts actually get taller when they’re in space? It’s pretty wild to think about! Here on Earth, gravity is constantly pulling us down, which compresses the discs in our spine throughout the day. That’s why you might find yourself a tiny bit shorter at night than when you first wake up in the morning – your spine has had a chance to decompress while you’re lying down.
But imagine being in the microgravity environment of space! Without that constant downward pull, those squishy discs between your vertebrae have the freedom to expand. It’s like they’re taking a big, collective sigh of relief and stretching out. This can make an astronaut temporarily grow anywhere from about one to two inches! It doesn’t last forever, though. Once they return to Earth’s gravity, their spine slowly compresses back to its usual height over a few months. So, while they might enjoy a temporary growth spurt among the stars, they eventually return to their terrestrial stature. Pretty cool, right? It just goes to show how much gravity shapes our bodies in ways we don’t even realize!
